In a unanimous Supreme Court decision early last month, a ruling on Biosig Instruments' heart-rate monitor patent was deemed invalid. Biosig Instruments' failed attempt at suing competitor Nautilus for allegedly overstepping the boundaries of their patent sets a precedent for future medical device patent cases--unless clearly defined, future vague patent cases won't find any favorable rulings in court. After years of cases of intentionally hazy patents, the Supreme Court put down its gavel, ruling against Biosig Instruments to stop further ambiguity allowances in patents. Story
