Companies: Terumo/CaridianBCT
Value: $2.6 billion

Scoop: In March, Japan's largest medical devicemaker Terumo inked a deal to purchase Sweden-based Gambro's CaridianBCT unit for $2.6 billion to form the world's largest maker of blood transfusion products. CaridianBCT is based in Lakewood, CO.

"There is rising global demand for blood transfusion products, in part due to the aging of the population in developed nations (and increased need for treatments requiring blood products) and, in emerging economies, it is the rapid development of healthcare infrastructure," noted Terumo in a statement.

At the time, Terumo said the buy would help it achieve the long-term objective of target revenue of ¥1 trillion (roughly $13 billion) within 10 years, RTTNews noted.

As MarketWatch noted at the time, the buy came as Japanese life sciences companies were looking abroad for deals. For example, Daiichi Sankyo had just announced that it would spend close to a $1 billion to buy California's Plexxikon.
