Company: Angel Medical Systems
Location: Shrewsbury, NJ
Shrewsbury, NJ-based Angel Medical Systems boasts of some serious top-grade talent. Co-founder and Chair Robert Fischell worked at Johns Hopkins University, Applied Physics Laboratory full-time for a quarter century. This interest eventually manifested itself in medical devices, especially pacemakers and implantable heart defibrillators.
Meanwhile, CEO David Fischell has founded 9 biomedical device companies in the last 15 years. In addition, he was the primary designer of the BX Velocity and Cypher coronary stents for Johnson & Johnson's ($JNJ) Cordis unit, according to the company's website.
Angel's main product, the Guardian system, isn't available in the U.S., but it does have CE Mark approval, which the company obtained last year. The system provides an early warning to detect coronary occlusion from thrombotic events such as plaque ruptures.
The Guardian monitors the heart's electrical signal constantly looking for changes that may indicate the organ is not getting enough oxygen. The system may potentially detect heart attacks that have no or atypical symptoms. If a potential heart attack is detected, the system vibrates and communicates with a pager-sized device that beeps and flashes, alerting the patient, according to the company's website.
The system is commercially available in Brazil and is being tested in the U.S. in the ALERTS Phase II study under an investigational device exemption from the FDA.
